Kyphosis

 

When viewed from behind, our spine normally appears straight. There are two curvatures on the side. The curvature in the back area is medically called " Kyphosis " and the one in the waist region is called " Lordosis ".
Kyphosis in the back area does not normally exceed 45 degrees. If it exceeds this, it is referred to as "hyperkiphosis". It is called humpback in the folk language. Scheurmann's kyphosis occurs as a result of wedging of the vertebrae during adolescence. The cause is not known exactly. It is more common in men.

 

Kyphosis Treatment

 

Observation

 

The angle of kyphosis is measured with x-rays every 6 months. Patients with a 60-80 degree hump (kyphosis) can be given a corset with an exercise program.

 

Kyphosis Surgery

 

Surgery is recommended for kyphosis over 80 degrees. The aim of surgery is to correct kyphosis and prevent its progression. Surgery is performed with metal implants placed in the spine under neuromonitorization. Neuromonitorization has further increased the reliability of this procedure. Neuromonitorization warns the surgeon about nerve injuries during the operation and many operations that could not be performed before can be performed easily. The patient can easily return to normal activities within 2-3 months after surgery.
